This weekend will be an absolute delight for both professional and amateur astronomers alike: On Saturday, the United States will be treated to a “supermoon” event — an evening where the full moon appears at its largest and brightest in the night sky. It’s the first of six major celestial events slated to occur in the month of May.

The moon will officially become full at 11:35 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. This coincides almost perfectly with the moon’s perigee — that is, the moment when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit. This supermoon will be especially pronounced given that this will be the moon’s closest approach of the year. (more…)

(CNN) — If you like streaming lots of audio or video to your cell phone and you don’t have an unlimited data plan, you might end up with a bad case of “bill shock” when your wireless carrier hits you with overage charges.

In October, under pressure from the Federal Communications Commission, U.S. carriers agreed to start alerting customers by text message when they’re getting close to hitting their plan caps on data, phone minutes and text messages. This would allow users to either curb their use for the rest of the month or switch to a higher (and pricier) tier before they incur overage charges.

The carriers also agreed to fully implement these alerts within a year.

So, it’s been six months. How are they doing? (more…)

Welcome to The Social Reaction.  This is my first post.  Hooray!

I am thrilled to start this blog about the documentation of my life as a Master’s student of Social Work.  I decided to start this blog as a result of realizing how interested I was in the many social issues that we see today, specifically with the LGBT population.  As a gay man myself, I feel that we (as a community) have a voice and a reaction to what we are capable/not capable of doing (i.e. marriage).

But as I continued to develop ideas for the blog, I realized that I wanted to combine the idea of posting about gay-related news with my personal and professional experience through graduate school.  I don’t start classes until August, but I know that once I do, life will be as fast as a race.  I will be reading new ideas, meeting new people, working in clinical settings, and above all, maturing myself to work professionally as a social worker.  I don’t know what to expect, but I am ready for this change.

In addition to posting my reactions to gay news and documenting my education, I also would like to share general interest through fashion, music, entertainment, and ways to help “The Gay Man” be a true gentlemen.  We only live once; might as well share my reactions with the world.

Reactions.  That is exactly what this is.  This blog is a reaction to society.  A reaction to experience.  A reaction to life.  We all live in different societies and carry different reactions to what society gives us.  This is my reaction.  This is my life.  This is THE SOCIAL REACTION.
