WATCH NOW: USC TROJANS COMMENCEMENT

Congratulations to the USC Class of 2014!!  It has been another year for many USC students!  As I was driving to work (on top of being a USC graduate student, I also have the privilege of working as USC staff), I noticed the smiles that many students on this campus shared with each other, friends, and families.

THE SOCIAL REACTION IS BACK!

And so he returned!

After almost 2 years of hiatus, I have decided to return to the world of blogging.  First and foremost, I would like to apologize for my departure as I underestimated the workload of being a Master of Social Work graduate student.  With a full-time job, internships, meetings, studying, and a relationship in between, I never realized the extent of how much time it took to blog a simple post!

Let’s Drink! Cinco de Mayo Boosts Tequila and Chip Sales

In Houston, ballet folklorico dancers will ring in Cinco de Mayo by stomping to traditional Mexican music in a city park. New York City will close parts of Spanish Harlem and Queens for street fairs as Mexican flags flap from apartment fire escapes and car antennas. Albuquerque honors the day with a Mariachi concert and free cab rides for those who show their love for Mexico with a little too much Dos Equis XX or tequila.

Even West Des Moines, Iowa, has an all-day festival with Mexican food, artwork and live music. Continue reading Let’s Drink! Cinco de Mayo Boosts Tequila and Chip Sales

Fighting Irish Fights for What’s Right

Moving at the glacial pace typical of Catholic institutions, the University of Notre Dame has said it will wait until the fall to make a decision about whether or not to official recognize—and give student fees to—a gay-straight alliance.A school spokesperson was lightning-quick, however, in announcing that Notre Dame would not add sexual orientation to the school’s non-discrimination policy. The First Reaction

Image

Welcome to The Social Reaction.  This is my first post.  Hooray!

I am thrilled to start this blog about the documentation of my life as a Master’s student of Social Work.  I decided to start this blog as a result of realizing how interested I was in the many social issues that we see today, specifically with the LGBT population.  As a gay man myself, I feel that we (as a community) have a voice and a reaction to what we are capable/not capable of doing (i.e. marriage).

But as I continued to develop ideas for the blog, I realized that I wanted to combine the idea of posting about gay-related news with my personal and professional experience through graduate school.  I don’t start classes until August, but I know that once I do, life will be as fast as a race.  I will be reading new ideas, meeting new people, working in clinical settings, and above all, maturing myself to work professionally as a social worker.  I don’t know what to expect, but I am ready for this change.

In addition to posting my reactions to gay news and documenting my education, I also would like to share general interest through fashion, music, entertainment, and ways to help “The Gay Man” be a true gentlemen.  We only live once; might as well share my reactions with the world.

Reactions.  That is exactly what this is.  This blog is a reaction to society.  A reaction to experience.  A reaction to life.  We all live in different societies and carry different reactions to what society gives us.  This is my reaction.  This is my life.  This is THE SOCIAL REACTION.
