MOTHER’S DAY: HOW TO PREPARE FOR HER BIG DAY

We have one more week to plan out the most important day of our lives….MOTHER’S DAY!  Now I don’t know about you, but my mom is my #1 woman in my life.  My mom has supported me through everything and anything that Life has brought me.  Coming out to my mom about 10 years ago (wow, I just realized it’s been 10 years) was one of the best feelings I felt throughout my entire life!  I feel like since I came out to her one Summer evening, our relationship has brought us a lot closer.  I can share and talk to her, pretty much, about everything!  I also thank her for a lot of my successes as she has been my prime supporter (both morally and financially).  Without my mom, I don’t know where I would be today. 50 Shades of Grey

Apparently this book is the hot deal right now!  I know that this book has been in the gossip columns and TV commentaries lately, but I am just curious as to why this book is taking over social media.

I am not negatively judging the book by it’s cover, all I’m asking is for someone to clarify why I should purchase this book and give it a try.  I first heard about this novel when I was getting ready for work two weeks ago.  The author, E.L. James, was a guest on the Today show on NBC.  It was one of her first public interviews, since her novel went stardom.  I remember listening to her as she mentioned that she didn’t expect her writing to go “platinum” that she was just inspired by her previous “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” predecessors.  Continue reading 50 Shades of Grey

Classic Comic Strip Features Gay Teen Story

FUNKY WINKERBEAN X390 (GLAAD) | ADVOCATE.COM

After dealing with suicide, alcoholism, and teen pregnancy 40-year-old comic strip Funky Winkerbean will include a story arc about gay couple at Tom Batiuk’s fictional Westivew High School.

Batiuk has been known as a compelling comic strip writer who has featured story lines based on real life serious topics such as teen pregnancy, suicide, cancer, alcoholism, ad other issues.  But this time, Batiuk was compelled to write about gay teenagers after sitting in on classes at his old high school.  In response to his new story line, Batiuk mentions,

I see how the younger generation’s attitude toward gays is more open and accepting than that of their predecessors.  It shows promise that this emerging generation will one day bring this cultural war to an end, Continue reading Classic Comic Strip Features Gay Teen Story

The First Reaction

Image

Welcome to The Social Reaction.  This is my first post.  Hooray!

I am thrilled to start this blog about the documentation of my life as a Master’s student of Social Work.  I decided to start this blog as a result of realizing how interested I was in the many social issues that we see today, specifically with the LGBT population.  As a gay man myself, I feel that we (as a community) have a voice and a reaction to what we are capable/not capable of doing (i.e. marriage).

But as I continued to develop ideas for the blog, I realized that I wanted to combine the idea of posting about gay-related news with my personal and professional experience through graduate school.  I don’t start classes until August, but I know that once I do, life will be as fast as a race.  I will be reading new ideas, meeting new people, working in clinical settings, and above all, maturing myself to work professionally as a social worker.  I don’t know what to expect, but I am ready for this change.

In addition to posting my reactions to gay news and documenting my education, I also would like to share general interest through fashion, music, entertainment, and ways to help “The Gay Man” be a true gentlemen.  We only live once; might as well share my reactions with the world.

Reactions.  That is exactly what this is.  This blog is a reaction to society.  A reaction to experience.  A reaction to life.  We all live in different societies and carry different reactions to what society gives us.  This is my reaction.  This is my life.  This is THE SOCIAL REACTION.
